Methodology: establish comparability before drawing a conclusion
Before comparing figures, we check the source, time period, and population covered. Only then do we describe the value, uncertainty, and decision it can reasonably support.
The same year does not mean the same period
- Finding
- Data ending in different months do not describe the same part of the season, even when the title refers to the same year.
- Evidence
- Each indicator retains its period, comparison year, retrieval timestamp, and provisional or final status.
- Decision implication
- Use a comparison only when the periods match or when the difference is explained directly beside the display.
Registered and commercial accommodation are different sets
- Finding
- Registered, commercial, and classified accommodation describe different populations and are not interchangeable labels.
- Evidence
- The method keeps each source definition and compares common commercial coverage whenever that comparison is available.
- Decision implication
- Choose the series that fits the question and state what remains outside the selected coverage.
Provisional value, final release, and correction
- Finding
- A new source release may make a small numerical change or may alter the meaning of the edition’s conclusion.
- Evidence
- Edition 2026-PSR v1.0 retains a version marker, source status, and a link to a material correction note.
- Decision implication
- Record a minor revision beside the source; issue a clearly marked new version when the conclusion changes.
What official aggregates do not measure
- Finding
- Official aggregates do not show hotel profitability, guest intent, sales channel, or future occupancy for one property.
- Evidence
- The method separates observed data, calculations based on those data, and editorial interpretation, with limits for each layer.
- Decision implication
- Combine the external indicator with internal operating data before a pricing, capacity, or investment decision.
Origin of the methodology rules
- This page explains comparison rules and does not introduce a new set of numerical indicators.
- Periods and retrieval records appear on the data pages that actually use each metric.
- A derived measure must retain links to all of its input series.
- Non-comparable periods or coverage remain separate rather than being forced into one figure.
